When two quotes for the same pool differ widely, surprise is natural. The gap usually has reasons, mostly in how each contractor reads the factors behind cost. This article gives no price, because any price without a visit is a guess. It gives you something more useful: an understanding of each factor, what raises or lowers it, and which ones you can influence. With that, you can read any quote critically and ask the questions that reveal the real difference.
Factor one: size and depth
Size sets the quantity of waterproofing, tile, adhesive and grout. Depth has its own effect:
- Deeper walls mean more area to waterproof and tile for the same surface footprint.
- Deep pools need scaffolding or work platforms at some stages.
- Draining and refilling take longer with more water.
- Slopes between depths need more tile cutting and precision.
Can you control it? Usually not, unless you plan to change the depth, which is a structural decision.
Factor two: type and extent of damage
| Damage | Work required |
|---|---|
| Worn grout | Clean out and regrout |
| Loose tiles in one area | Remove and refix, checking waterproofing beneath |
| Leak at a fitting or joint | Local sealing or replacement |
| Failed waterproofing in one area | Remove tiles, rewaterproof, retile |
| Generally failed waterproofing | Full renovation from the structure |
| Structural cracks | Engineering assessment, structural repair, then waterproofing and tiling |
Visible damage is not always the real damage. Loose tiles in one corner may reflect failed waterproofing throughout. Engineering inspection sizes this factor accurately.
Can you control it? Yes, through timing. The sooner you act, the smaller the damage.
Factor three: materials
- Waterproofing: flexible cementitious systems, polymer systems and membranes, each suited to different structural conditions.
- Tiles: ceramic, porcelain, glass mosaic and natural stone, each with different material and laying costs.
- Adhesive and grout: pool rated products survive immersion and chlorine, ordinary ones fail fast.
- Fittings: lights, returns, skimmers and ladders vary by material and design.
Mosaic, for example, takes far longer to lay than large tiles, so labour costs more even if the material price is similar. See heat resistant pool tiles for Riyadh.
Can you control it? Yes, on the decorative finish. We never advise saving on waterproofing or adhesive.
Factor four: site access
- A pool in an open yard with direct access eases equipment, materials and debris removal.
- Courtyard, rooftop or narrow rear access pools need manual handling, adding time and labour.
- Premium decks or gardens around the pool need extra protection during work.
- A distant discharge point affects draining.
- Nearby power and water supply for the work matters too.
Can you control it? Partly, by clearing a work route and moving furniture away.
Factor five: previous repairs
If the pool was renovated quickly before, such as tiles over old tiles or waterproofing over failed waterproofing, the new job starts by removing those layers, which can be substantial. Past repairs can also hide deeper problems, such as a crack covered with adhesive that has widened underneath. Tell the technician about any earlier work you know of.
Can you control it? Not the past, but you can refuse any new work that builds over an untreated problem.
Factor six: technical systems
Renovation often exposes the state of the pump, filter, pipework and lighting. Upgrading them now while the pool is empty raises current cost but avoids a second drain. Postponing lowers today's cost but may cost more later.
Can you control it? Yes, by deciding what to combine and what to postpone.
Factor seven: timing and scheduling
Milder months give materials better curing conditions and reduce the chance of rework. Planning ahead lets you compare quotes and prepare materials calmly. Emergency renovation in peak summer is usually rushed, which helps neither quality nor cost.
- Size and depth: mostly fixed.
- Damage: controlled by acting early.
- Materials: save on looks, not on waterproofing.
- Access: prepare the site.
- Past repairs: tell the technician.
- Systems: decide consciously to combine or postpone.
- Timing: plan early.

Frequently asked questions
What raises renovation cost most?
Usually the type and extent of damage, especially generally failed waterproofing or structural cracks, which require work from the structure up.
Can I cut cost with cheaper materials?
On the decorative finish, yes, such as tile type and design. Saving on waterproofing, adhesive and grout usually leads to another renovation.
Do photos replace a site visit?
Photos give a first idea but cannot show hollow tiles, waterproofing, pipework or access difficulty. Accurate pricing needs a visit.
Why do two quotes for the same pool differ so much?
Usually because of different scope, materials, preparation or warranty. Compare quotes line by line before judging price.
