When a renovation quote arrives, it usually says "partial renovation" or "full renovation" with a figure. But what does that mean on site? Which works will happen, which materials will be used and what is left out? Many disputes between owners and contractors start here, because each side understands "partial" or "full" differently. This article breaks both types down item by item and compares them, so you know exactly what you are paying for and can tell whether a quote is complete.
General factors before comparing
- Size and depth: set material quantities in full work and affect draining in both.
- Structure condition: cracks and weak areas add repair work.
- Materials: waterproofing, tiles, adhesive and grout.
- Access: for equipment in and debris out.
- Previous repairs: old layers that must be removed.
These explain why two partial renovations on different pools can differ widely even for the same sized area.
Partial renovation: what it includes
- Area inspection to define the damage boundary and cause and confirm the rest is sound.
- Draining or lowering the water depending on location.
- Removing finishes in the area down to a sound surface.
- Treating the cause: sealing a fitting, treating a crack or repairing a joint.
- Local waterproofing with generous overlap onto the existing layer.
- Retiling with matching or close tiles, or a design that makes the difference deliberate.
- Grouting and curing, then refilling and balancing.
Not usually included: sound parts of the pool, system upgrades or fittings outside the area. The main partial challenge is the joint between new and old work and tile matching, so ask how both will be handled.
Full renovation: what it includes
- Full engineering inspection of structure, pipework, fittings and plant room.
- Complete draining and cleaning with protection of surroundings.
- Complete finish removal of tiles, grout, adhesive and old waterproofing down to concrete.
- Structural repair of cracks, honeycombing, weak areas and exposed reinforcement.
- Fittings sealed or replaced: skimmers, returns, lights and drain.
- A complete waterproofing system over the whole pool.
- Flood test before tiling.
- Full retiling with new tiles and suitable grout.
- Refilling, balancing and handover with a written warranty.
Possible extras: pump and filter upgrades, new lighting, design changes such as new steps or a shallow area, and a new surrounding deck.
In full work, complete removal is a significant item in itself. Teams sometimes find an older tile layer beneath the current one, or thick loose render, and all of it must come off down to sound concrete. That is what separates a real full renovation from a "full" job that simply lays new tiles over old layers. If a full quote has no clear item for removal to the structure, ask about it directly.
Side by side, item by item
| Item | Partial | Full |
|---|---|---|
| Inspection | Area plus confirmation of the rest | Whole pool and systems |
| Draining | Partial or full depending on area | Full |
| Removal | Area only | All finishes to structure |
| Structural repair | In the area if needed | Whole pool |
| Waterproofing | Local with overlap | New complete system |
| Flood test | Case by case | Essential before tiling |
| Tiles | Area only, matching challenge | All new, uniform design |
| Fittings | Those in the area | All |
| Duration | Usually shorter | Longer, needs scheduling |
| Warranty | Renovated area | Whole pool |
Reading the quote before you sign
- Is scope defined by location and area? "Wall renovation" is not enough.
- Are materials named, especially the waterproofing system, adhesive and grout?
- Are draining, cleaning and refilling included?
- Is there a test before handover?
- What happens if something unexpected appears after removal? There should be a written report and your approval before extra work.
- Is the warranty written, and what exactly does it cover?
- Is there engineering supervision?

Getting an accurate quote
- Book a site visit and an inspection that defines the problem and its boundary.
- Ask for written findings before the quote.
- If your pool sits between partial and full, request both with equal detail.
- Compare the items in the table above across both quotes.
- Confirm how surprises and the warranty are handled.

Frequently asked questions
Is partial renovation always cheaper than full?
Per project, usually yes, as the scope is smaller. With widespread problems partial work may repeat and cost more in total.
Can I know the cost without a visit?
No. Items and quantities depend on the actual pool condition and damage boundary. After the visit we send a detailed written quotation.
Do you offer a free site visit?
Yes. We visit to assess the pool and recommend the right renovation type, then send a written quotation with no obligation.
Does the warranty differ between partial and full?
Yes. Partial work is usually warranted for the renovated area only, full work for the whole pool. We state the scope in the quotation.
